Eight ways in

One set. Eight ways to drill it.

The same words, eight different ways — because the mode that finally makes a word stick isn’t the same for everyone. These are the tiles you’ll actually tap.

auto_storiesStory mode

Your words. One story.
Written tonight, for you.

Every other app drills words in isolation. FlexLex takes the words you picked and writes a short story around them — at your level, from your set. Then you read it, and tap anything you don’t recognise.

Der Hund und der Regen

Am Morgen war der Himmel grau und eine schwere Wolke hing über der Stadt. Mein Hund wollte trotzdem nach draußen. Wir mussten schnell laufen, denn plötzlich begann der Regen. Er war eiskalt, und die Straße wurde in einer Minute nass. Wir versteckten uns unter einem Baum und warteten, bis das Wetter wieder ruhig war. Danach roch alles nach Erde.

Tapping translates on your device. The story itself is written with your own Google AI key; nothing else leaves your phone.

Beyond the drill

Get words in fast. Keep them forever.

Typing vocabulary by hand is the reason most people quit. So most of FlexLex is about skipping that part.

photo_camera

Scan a page

Photograph a textbook page — or your own handwriting — and FlexLex pulls the words out. Shoot several pages and it merges them.

table_view

Import a spreadsheet

Drop in an Excel, CSV or JSON file and it becomes a set. No row limit in the app.

ios_share

Share a set as a link

The whole set travels inside the link itself. Nothing is uploaded, and no server ever sees your words.

folder

Folders that make sense

Colour-coded folders, article colour-coding for German and friends, and bulk edits when a set gets messy.

trending_up

Streaks, levels, gems

A streak worth protecting, XP that levels up, chests to open. The part that gets you back tomorrow.

cloud_off

Yours, on your device

No account, no sync, no cloud. Back up to a file whenever you like — and it restores in one tap.

list_altThat’s the short version — see every feature FlexLex has, from the SM-2 scheduler to handwriting OCR.

Spaced repetition

Reviewed right before you’d forget.

Each answer tells FlexLex how well you know a word, and it schedules the next review from that. Words you fumble come back tomorrow. Words you own aren’t seen again for months. You just open the app; it decides what’s due.

Right this time. Next review moves out to three days.

+3 days

+3 weeks

Still right. It’s yours — see you in a couple of months.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

The things people actually ask.

Is FlexLex really free?expand_more

Yes — every feature. All nine study modes, unlimited sets and words, scanning, import, backup and share links, with no account and no sign-up. Pro costs $15 a year and sells exactly two things: no ads, and unlimited hearts. It doesn’t unlock features, because there’s nothing left to unlock.

What are hearts, and will they block me?expand_more

Hearts apply to just two modes — Test and Rush. You get 5 a day, and they refill daily. Every other mode is unlimited and always has been. If you run out mid-test, you can watch an ad, spend gems, or wait for tomorrow, and the test resumes where it stopped. Pro users have unlimited hearts.

Does it work without internet?expand_more

Yes. FlexLex stores everything locally on your device — no cloud sync, no server, no account. Your words are available on a plane or a mountain. The one exception is Story mode, which needs a connection to write the story; everything else, including tapping a word for a translation, runs on the phone.

What is Story mode, and why does it need a key?expand_more

Story mode writes a short story using words from your own set, at the CEFR level you pick, and highlights them in the text so you can tap any word for a translation. Because it generates real text, it runs on your own free Google AI key — the app asks for one the first time. That means the AI bill is yours, not ours, and we never sit in the middle of your data.

What languages does it support?expand_more

Any of them. You write both sides of each word pair yourself, so FlexLex works for English–Japanese, Spanish–French, or your chemistry vocabulary. Spoken pronunciation covers around 27 languages; everything else is language-agnostic.

How does spaced repetition work?expand_more

FlexLex runs the SM-2 (SuperMemo 2) algorithm on every word. Every review records whether you knew a word, found it hard, or missed it, and that answer sets when you’ll see it next. Struggle with a word and it comes back quickly; know it cold and the gap stretches out to weeks and then months. The Review queue only ever shows what’s due today. The full details are here.

Can I import my existing word lists?expand_more

Yes — Excel (.xlsx), CSV, and JSON, with no row limit in the app. You can also photograph a printed list, a textbook page, or your own handwriting and let the scanner do it. You can even build a set right here in your browser and send it to your phone as a link.

Is my data safe if I switch phones?expand_more

Back up to a file whenever you like and restore it in one tap — the backup holds every set, folder and bit of progress. FlexLex also writes an automatic backup to your Downloads folder after an update, which survives even uninstalling the app. Because there’s no account, that file is the whole story: keep it and you keep everything.
